About Vancouver-Whistler 2010
In 1960 the idea surfaced of hosting an Olympic Winter Games in the Garibaldi (now Whistler) region. In 1970 Vancouver-Garibaldi was Canada’s bid for the 1976 Olympic Winter Games. In 1974 Whistler was again considered as a candidate for the 1980 Olympic Winter Games. In 1998 the Canadian Olympic Association (COA) selected Vancouver-Whistler over Calgary and Quebec City to be Canada’s candidate for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games and Paralympic Games. In 1999 the Vancouver-Whistler 2010 Bid Corporation was formed. Vancouver’s bid budget is $23 million. Organizers say the Games (including the Paralympic Games) would draw 6,000 athletes and officials, 10,000 media representatives, and 35,000 overnight visitors to Vancouver and Whistler. The Bid Corporation is supported by more than 30 companies, corporations, and organizations.
About the Games:
The Olympic Winter Games and Paralympic Games would be held in February and March of 2010 respectively with an estimated 6,000 athletes and officials from around the world coming to Vancouver and Whistler.
What events are planned for Vancouver and where will they be held?
The bid is proposing that Vancouver host the ice events: Curling, Figure Skating, Ice Hockey, and Speed Skating (Long Track and Short Track).
At this time, Vancouver 2010 believes that General Motors Place and an upgraded Pacific Coliseum will be used along with additional new or renovated ice surfaces in Metropolitan Vancouver.
What events are planned for Whistler and where will they be held?
The snow events are currently proposed for the Whistler area including Alpine Skiing (Downhill and Slalom events) on Whistler Mountain and Blackcomb Mountain. Cross Country Skiing, Biathlon, and Ski Jumping are slated for a proposed new Nordic Centre in the Callaghan Valley near Whistler. Feasibility studies are underway to determine possible locations for Bobsleigh, Luge and Skeleton, and Freestyle Skiing and Snowboarding.
How do the Paralympics fit in?
If chosen for the Games, a host city is committed to staging the Winter Games and the Paralympic Games, and Vancouver Whistler's bid encompasses both.
As with the Winter Games, current proposals are to have Paralympic events divided between Vancouver and Whistler, but the scale of the Paralympics is much smaller.
Plans for both the Winter Games and the Paralympics will ensure that all facilities are accessable.
